He tries to think of everything, and seems so prepared. Then he sets out, and a big wave knocks him into the sea - so much for the perfect boat and all the provisions. A whale comes along and saves him, and he rides the whale's back, watching the stars at night. They become friends at the deepest level. I'm not sure it's like an onion, but it does show how the journey is about uncertainty and unexpected discoveries along the way.
